La Pouce is one of Mauritius’ most recognisable peaks, rising just outside the capital in the Moka mountain range and named for its thumb-like shape. The trail is approachable, making it ideal for beginners, casual hikers or anyone wanting a half-day outdoor escape that still delivers a satisfying sense of achievement.
The path winds steadily upward through native vegetation, revealing widening views over the capital, the northern plains and, on clear days, glimmers of coastline in the distance. The ascent is gradual enough to enjoy at your own rhythm, allowing plenty of pauses to take in the landscape rather than rushing toward the summit.
At the top, the reward is panoramic and unmistakable: one of those rare vantage points where mountains, city and sea fall into a single sweeping frame. Historically used as a lookout by early settlers, the peak now serves a lovelier purpose, inviting hikers to experience the island from an epic perspective.
La Pouce lies within a protected conservation area, and guided hikes with optional transport can be arranged for those who prefer local insight along the way. For visitors wanting an accessible mountain experience that balances ease, history and classic Mauritian scenery, this hike offers a beautifully measured adventure.
