Our Story
Mauritius is iconic in that it is an island geographically but has never been an island… culturally.
Her position in the Indian Ocean placed her directly in the path of the trade winds dictating movement long before engines did. Sailors learned them by watching skies and tides in a time before there were maps. The trade winds carried dhows from the Swahili coast, Arab traders following monsoon rhythms and, later, European vessels edging east in search of spice, sugar and advantage. Mauritius became a certainty on those routes. A place you stopped whether intended or not. Ships arrived worn. Crews needed fresh water, timber, repairs. Cargo shifted hands. Cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon moved through the port alongside silk, tea, sugar and tools. Knowledge travelled with them. As did people. Labour and skill from Africa. Artisanal decor and spices fused into food and furnishings from India. Merchants with an instinct for ships' treasure from China girded the island in riches. Dutch, French and British structure adapted to heat, distance and time.
Nothing arrived pristine. Everything was absorbed.
The island learned early how to receive influence without losing herself. Food evolved. Language softened. Architecture responded to heat and wind. Customs formed quietly, shaped by use and practicality. What endured, endured because it belonged.
Salt & Soul grew from that lineage.
